In 2005, Ryan Whiting arrived at Arizona State University as one of the best prep throwers in the coun- try, and in 2010, he left ASU as one of the best throwers in the world. At Central Dauphin High School in Harrisburg, Penn., Ryan was the dominant thrower in the nation, named an All-American ten times and first-team all-state four times. In his senior year of high school, Ryan won the national scholastic indoor and the USATF Junior titles in the shot put, before winning gold medals in both the shot put and discus at the Pan-Am Junior Championships.

At Arizona State, Ryan developed into one of the most dominant throwers in NCAA history. Ryan won his first national title for the Sun Devils in the shot put at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Championships with a throw of 21.73m, a collegiate record. The following year, Ryan successfully defended his indoor shot put title, before going on a tear in the outdoor season, winning every collegiate shot put competition he entered, including the NCAA Outdoor Championships, where he also scored points for ASU with his runner-up finish in the Discus.

In 2010, Ryan was again undefeated in collegiate competition, winning his third consecutive NCAA Indoor crown in the Shot Put, defending his outdoor title in the Shot Put, and winning his first NCAA title in the Discus. In doing so, Ryan became the first thrower to pull off the Shot/Discus double since Janus Robberts won both titles for Sothern Methodist in 2002. Leaving Arizona State with six national titles and a shot put best just 3cm shy of John Godina’s collegiate record, Whiting is leaving little doubt that he will soon take his place as the next dominant American thrower.
